 Special Features

Welcome to Grand Oaks circa 1835 located on scenic, park-like Mountain Road in the historic district of the village of Halifax, the county seat with a population a little over 1300.
Twin brick columns mark the entrance with the mansion majestically positioned among the century old "grand" oaks just the right distance from the tree shaded side walk to afford privacy. The asphalt drive circles in front but also leads to the back of the lush 11 acres of grounds to Guest House 1, "Little Acorn" and Guest House 2, as well as the stables, and the former pool house now used for storage. The terrain in back is open & hilly with lovely vistas of neighboring properties. The front lawn is level and shaded affording glimpses through the trees of St. John's Episcopal Church constructed by Dabney Cosby, Jr., the Grand Oaks builder.

Mr. Cosby & some of the Grand Oaks descendants are buried in the church's immaculately maintained grave yard. Just a short stroll will take you to the War Memorial & downtown's local shops & the Molasses Grill, a fine dining establishment as well as the historic courthouse with records dating back in the 1700's . You will find yourself in a place where history and hospitality have been preserved & cherished, but you will also be delighted to find Wi-Fi hot spots as well.

The mansion is the perfect spot for a single family dwelling with two smaller homes for other family members, but the property also could be a candidate for a spectacular bed & breakfast; and some of the town "fathers" have indicated willingness to issue the special use permits necessary to make that possible.

This magnificent 11.13 Acre National Register of Historic Places property was built in 1843 by Dab-ney Cosby, Jr. for William Holt, the Clerk of Court for Halifax County, VA, and his wife, Phoebe Ferguson Holt. The original home was a 2 story Greek Revival, constructed of brick laid in Flemish bond with chim-neys at the gable ends. A one story back wing contained the dining room, pantry and office. After pass-ing through several owners, Grand Oaks was purchased in 1917 by Hannah Vaughan, wife of Colonel Ira Vaughan. Colonel Vaughan was hired to oversee the construction of the hydroelectric dam and power plant on the Banister River.

Grand Oaks has remained in the family ever since and is included in the Mountain Road Historic District. The Vaughans remodeled the house to include wings on either end and extended the roof line , giving the home a Colonial Revival façade. Although interior changes have been made, the original stairway still has a commanding presence with hand carved elements, and door and window surrounds retain their original Greek Revival lintels. With a total of 6,148 S.F., the home includes 7 Beds, 7 Full Baths and 2 Half Baths. The property also includes 2 cottages, a stable and a pool house.
