This magnificent 11.13 Acre National Register of Historic Places property was built in 1843 by Dab-ney Cosby, Jr. for William Holt, the Clerk of Court for Halifax County, VA, and his wife, Phoebe Ferguson Holt. The original home was a 2 story Greek Revival, constructed of brick laid in Flemish bond with chim-neys at the gable ends. A one story back wing contained the dining room, pantry and office. After pass-ing through several owners, Grand Oaks was purchased in 1917 by Hannah Vaughan, wife of Colonel Ira Vaughan. Colonel Vaughan was hired to oversee the construction of the hydroelectric dam and power plant on the Banister River.

Grand Oaks has remained in the family ever since and is included in the Mountain Road Historic District. The Vaughans remodeled the house to include wings on either end and extended the roof line , giving the home a Colonial Revival façade. Although interior changes have been made, the original stairway still has a commanding presence with hand carved elements, and door and window surrounds retain their original Greek Revival lintels.
