St. John's Rectory was built circa 1845 in classic Greek Revival style by Dabney Cosby, Jr. as a residence for clergymen who served St. John's Episcopal Church, that itself was built by his father, Dabney Cosby, Sr., the well known Jeffersonian builder. Both are located on park-like Mountain Road which is on the National Register of Historic Places, and both are within walking distance of the village of Halifax. The village of Halifax is the historic county seat. The Rectory, constructed of brick laid in Flemish bond, is a two-story, central passage dwelling that sits majestically on a high English basement. It has front and back porticos supported by two sets of double columns, a hip roof, 2 interior chimneys and wide central hallways with 2 rooms on each side on the first floor, 2nd floor, and basement. The front and back en-trance doors have transoms, and the windows on all floors are capped with stone lintels. New gas fur-naces and new central air conditioning for 1st and 2nd floors added in 2008. New kitchen cabinets, counter tops, appliances and vinyl floor added in 2009. The 2nd floor bath was gutted to the studs and rebuilt. The 4th upstairs BR had a closet and a vanity and sink added. All wood floors have been refin-ished or buffed. The interior and outside trim have been painted. This home has never changed hands. It has always been occupied by a St. John's Episcopal Church clergy family until the past two years when it was rented for a short period of time to two different families.
